 from his body´before the poison´delaying spell she'd cast ran out。
   As she started to lift Ryld his eyes flickered open察startling her。 He looked confused for a moment察but slowly recognition dawned。
   ;Halisstra察─he croaked。 ;Is it really you拭
   At first Halisstra thought he was still groggy from the poison。 Then she realized察from the way he was staring at her察that he truly did not recognize her。 She touched her face and found it cratered with overlapping scars。 Her hand trembling察she reached up still farther察and found that most of her hair had fallen out。 Only a few ragged strands remained。 The bae'qeshel magic had closed the wounds caused by her burns´but it had left her with terrible scars。
   She told herself not to worry about it´the priestesses would certainly have a spell that would smooth her skin and restore her hair。 Getting Ryld back was the thing to concentrate on。
   ;It is me察Ryld察─she told him。 ;Do you think you can walk拭Otherwise I'll have to carry you back across the Cold Field。;
   ;I can walk 。 。 。 if you help me up察─he said。 Then he looked around。 ;Splitter´where is it拭
   The poison having been slowed察Ryld struggled to his hands and knees´still shaky but looking stronger than he had just a moment before。 Halisstra knew he would no sooner leave his enchanted greatsword behind than he would sacrifice an arm or a leg察but he was still weak。
   ;I'll find it察─Halisstra told him。 ;You stay here察and save your strength。;
   She approached the worm carefully察worried that it might not yet be dead。 Its body was unmoving察however察coiled in a limp tangle。 Easing its mouth open察she yanked Seyll's songsword from its cheek and let the acid drain from the finger holes in the weapon's hilt。 Then she searched for Splitter。
   The greatsword lay close to the spot where Halisstra had hacked her way out of the worm's belly察its hilt protruding from under a coil of the worm。 She stooped and yanked it free´then spotted something lying half in and half out of the wound。 It was the sword she'd used to cut herself free。 Its blade was bright and untarnished´obviously magical察since it had been protected from the acid's corrosive effects´and curved。 Curved。
   Halisstra realized what weapon it must be。
   It was the Crescent Blade。
   Eyes wide with awe察ignoring the acid that was stinging the soles of her bare feet察she picked up the sword察then backed out of the pool of acid。 The hilt should have been slippery with the worm's digestive juices but its leather wrapping felt dry and clean´further evidence that it was a magical weapon。 Silver had been inlaid along the length of the blade察giving the metal its sheen。 The inlay spelled out words in the drow tongue that began to glow slightly as Halisstra held the sword。
   Ryld察rising unsteadily on his feet察moved closer to take a look as Halisstra read the inscription。
   ; 'Be your heart filled with light and your cause be true察I shall not fail you' ; she recited。 Her brows puckered in a doubtful frown。 ;Even in the Abyss拭─she whispered。
   When she looked up察she saw Ryld staring at her。
   ;So that's why you wanted the Crescent Blade察─he said softly。 ;To try to kill Lolth拭─He shook his head。 ;That's something even Vhaeraun failed to do。 How can you hope to succeed where a god has failed拭
   ;I don't know察─Halisstra answered honestly。
   Part of her felt manipulated´despite nearly being devoured by the worm察it felt as though the Crescent Blade had just fallen into her hands。 That made her wary察uneasy。 But at the same time察another part of her felt elation。 She might be no more than a piece on a sava board察being moved this way and that by an unseen hand察but that hand belonged to a goddess。 Eilistraee察for good or ill察had taken a personal interest in her´something Lolth had never done。 The thought filled Halisstra with a heady pride。
   ;Eilistraee is watching over me察─she told Ryld。 ;It feels as if all of this has been preordained´and I have a sense that it's my destiny to at least try to follow the path the goddess has set me on。 If I do succeed in killing Lolth察we'll at last be free of her clinging webs。 All of us。 The drow can e up into the light察without fear of her retaliation。;
   ;And if you fail。 。 。; Ryld began察then weakly coughed。
   Halisstra took his arm and helped to steady him。 They didn't have time to stand there contemplating her chances of success。 Not with the poison only temporarily held at bay。
   ;Do you have any spare clothing拭─she asked。
   He nodded at the backpack on the floor and said察 In there。 A tunic and some boots。;
   ;Good察─she said。
   A tunic and boots alone would be little protection against the bitter winds of the World Above察but Halisstra knew she could use her spells´if sparingly´to gain temporary respite from the cold。 She dug out the clothes and put them on察helped Ryld slide Splitter back into its sheath察and strapped the Crescent Blade and songsword across the top of her backpack and slipped it onto her back。
   ;e on察─she said察slipping one of Ryld's arms over her shoulder。 ;The sooner we get you back to the temple察the better your chances of living long enough to watch me die trying to kill a goddess。;

Chapter Thirty´three
   ;Ready拭─Pharaun asked察looking up from the circle he'd been drawing on the floor of the tunnel。
   Only a pinch of powdered amber remained in the pouch he was holding´just enough to plete the circle in which Quenthel and Jeggred stood。 The two were crowded close together察Quenthel stroking Jeggred's tangled mane in a calming gesture。
   Valas and Danifae stood outside the circle察back where the water dripping from their soaked piwafwis wouldn't mar the pattern。 Without levitation magic察they had no way to land safely on the storm´tossed ship察so they would remain in the tunnel。
   ;Get on with it察─Quenthel said察forcing his mind back to the task at hand。 ;Cast the spell。;
   Pharaun stepped into the circle beside her察taking care the hem of his piwafwi didn't disturb the powder察then he crouched to sprinkle the last pinch of amber that would plete the pattern on the floor。
   Standing again察he stared our through the ice wall at the ship of chaos察locking the position of its upper deck in his mind。
   ;Faer z'hind ─he cried。
   As his spell took effect察the stone floor vanished from under his feet。 An instant later he察Quenthel察and Jeggred were falling through the air toward the deck of the rapidly moving ship。 The wizard checked his descent by levitating察but the water stinging his eyes made it difficult to see。 He'd aimed for a pace or two above the deck´the only sane option察with the ship rising and falling so violently and listing at such a sharp angle´but without anything solid under his feet he was in danger of being hurled into the eye of the storm。 He floundered about察trying to find the deck with his feet as sprays of water lashed him and the wind tore at the hood of his piwafwi察nearly strangling him。 A gust of wind caught him察slamming him into the main mast and knocking the air from his lungs察Desperately察Pharaun grabbed at the closest thing to hand此one of the lines that formed the ship's rigging。
   The line pressed as his hands tightened around it。 Inside the line was something soft and wet´and warm。 An instant later察as something pulsed through it察Pharaun realized that the line was made not of rope but of a strand of intestine。 He curled his lip察hoping the line wouldn't rupture。 Pharaun didn't relish the thought of being spattered by its contents。
   He wedged one foot against the base of the mast察the other against the tilted deck察and he glanced up。 Jeggred and Quenthel had halted their fall a pace or two above him。 The draegloth had grabbed the mast and was hugging it with his fighting arms。 Rigid as a statue察muscles bulging察he easily held himself in place against the wind that tore at his mane。 Quenthel clung to his back察supported by the draegloth's smaller arms。
   Quenthel stared down at Pharaun察her hair writhing in the wind like the vipers that thrashed furiously in her whip。 She shouted someth
